A Study of Clinical Examination Charges of Chung Nam Provincial Hospital

Abstract
In order to survey the cost of each kind of medical service rendered at the central clinical examination rooms of the Chungnam Medical Center, surveys were conducted on the cost of all sectors of that hospital during a one-month period of July 15 to August 15, 1968, and the obtained data were directly complied together with comprehensive records of the central clinical examination rooms. As the result of studies and review conducted on the charges of the clinical examination rooms of other university hospitals and other hospitals, the following conclusion has been reached:
1. Adequate data required for survey were not available at hospitals because of their location in medium cities or provincial areas, their public operation (free medical service extended to patients), and their application of the composite therapeutical charge system.
2. Non-therapeutical cost constituted 39 percent of the total amount of cost. Its high percentage indicated the irrational management, which in turn imposes excessive burden on the patients.
3. The hematological examination charges were compared with its cost. As a result, it has been found out that the Yonsei University Hospital suffered 12 percent loss, and the National Medical Center 5 per cent loss, while the Ewha Woman¢¥s University Hospital acquired 1 per cent innet profit, and private hospitals 38 per cent in net profit.
4. As for urinalysis test, the Yonsei University Hospital acquired 1,130 percent net profit, the Catholic Medical Center 802 per cent net profit, the Ewha Woman¢¥s University Hospital 966 per cent net profit, the National Medical Center 351 per cent net profit, and private hospitals 925 per cent profit.
5. As for micro-biological examination, hospitals generally suffered net loss of 7.5 per cent due to the low rates of charges as compared with the cost.
